Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre (ESEOC)
In the Dame Clare Marx Building at Colchester Hospital
A bright future for orthopaedic surgery
Our state of the art centre for planned orthopaedic surgery will open in 2024 and will be one of the largest centres of its kind in Europe.
With eight new theatres and more than 70 beds we aim to operate on more than 10,000 patients every year.
The centre is being designed as will be a surgical hub bringing together the skills and expertise of staff in one place for some of our most common procedures such as hip and knee replacements. By pooling our expertise, we will reduce waiting times, develop and maintain specialist surgery, and train the surgical professionals of the future.
Improving patient care
The centre will be dedicated solely to elective care, providing clinical sustainability as well as future pandemic resilience.
Though attached to Colchester Hospital, the centre will function independently keeping surgical beds and theatres free for patients waiting for planned surgery. In addition, purpose-built x-ray and physiotherapy facilities will support patient recovery and a swift discharge.
From the design of the clinical spaces to the welcome they will receive, our patients have been with us all the way.
Our two four-bedded bays and sixteen side rooms will allow for a relaxed and comfortable recovery and further monitoring.

Our service has been designed for the future. Through our innovative GIRFT approach, we will become a centre of excellence, providing:
- a state-of-the-art clinical environment
