Schedule of pregnancy routine appointments and scans

This schedule is a guide to help you plan the months ahead.

Please be aware that as your care at ESNEFT will be tailored to your needs, you might need to have extra scans or more appointments.

6–10 weeks

This is called your Booking Appointment.

  • Midwife appointment at your GP surgery or at a Children’s Centre to discuss your choices about screening tests, antenatal care and place of delivery
  • Blood and urine tests
  • The midwife will advise you on diet, vitamin D, folic acid supplements, lifestyle and stopping smoking

11–13 weeks

  • Sonographer appointment at hospital
  • Dating scan
  • Screening blood test for Down’s syndrome

14–16 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP Surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check and further blood test if required

18–20 weeks

  • Sonographer appointment at hospital
  • Mid-trimester scan

23–25 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Your Mat B1 form
  • Information about breastfeeding

28 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Anti-D (if required)
  • Blood tests
  • MRSA swabs (if required)
  • Glucose tolerance test if indicated
  • Book antenatal classes/breastfeeding workshop or give written information

31 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP Surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • This appointment is optional if this is not your first pregnancy

34 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP Surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Information about vitamin K, labour and postnatal care

36 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at home/GP surgery
  • Antenatal check
  • Weight check
  • Presentation check
  • Book home birth if requested
  • Discuss birth plan

38 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP Surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Weight check

40 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Discussion of management of prolonged pregnancy and membrane sweeps
  • This appointment is optional if this is not your first pregnancy

41 weeks

  • Midwife appointment at your GP surgery/Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal check
  • Offer membrane sweep
  • Offer induction of labour 10–12 days past expected delivery date (EDD)
