Hospital packing list

Items you will need when you give birth in hospital

For yourself:

  • your pregnancy record (if you hold one)
  • toiletries
  • tissues
  • hand and bath towels
  • maternity or night sanitary towels
  • old or disposable underwear
  • nightwear suitable for breastfeeding
  • footwear
  • a camera. Video cameras are not allowed. Please ask permission before photographing any staff or procedures
  • transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine (if you wish to use one)
  • music for labour – a docking unit is available in each delivery room
  • snacks and drinks for you and your partner
  • a nursing bra and breast pads

We recommend hand-expressing breast milk if required, but some women like to have a breast pump ready

For your baby:

  • a hat and clothes such as vests, bodysuits etc
  • nappies
  • cotton wool

If you intend to formula feed
A pre-prepared bottle and teat is available for your baby’s first feed in hospital.

After this you must supply adequate bottles and formula for the subsequent feeds during your hospital stay.

Bottle sterilisers are available on the wards.
