About this service

After your home birth

The midwife will stay for 2 to 3 hours after the birth, until you and they are happy that all is well with both you and your baby. The midwife will provide all relevant information such as who will be visiting you at home and contact numbers in case of emergency. Your community midwife will provide the normal post-birth support.

Your baby will have a full neonatal assessment by a midwife or a doctor within 72 hours. This may be done by a community midwife in your home, or you may have to take your baby for an outpatient appointment at hospital – your midwife will be able to arrange this for you.

It is important that you are not on your own for the first few days at home.

The HSC’s book Birth to 5 (Opens in a new window)  has lots of useful information about caring for a child from birth to 5 years.
