What is research?

Research changes lives. Through research we can develop better treatments, improve diagnoses and prevention, and enhance the care and quality of life for everyone. We work with local people and in partnership with our local universities, NHS and industry organisations to develop world-class research.

Clinical research can mean a large study involving thousands of people or just one person.

Research takes many forms. It could be a one-off questionnaire, giving a blood sample, or a longer-term study looking at the impact of a drug or device.

Being involved in a study could be very short, or it may mean being monitored at the hospital or in the community on a regular basis depending on the study and treatment.

What are the benefits to patients?

Research improves health and social care for others, as well as giving hope for future generations.

Patients taking part in studies:

  • are able to try a new treatment or device
  • can discover more about their condition
  • can be more closely and regularly monitored
