MyChart patient app – shared access

Sharing MyChart access with loved ones or carers (Proxy Access)

Do you have a parent, partner, family member or carer who helps you manage your care? Or are you a parent who needs to manage care for your child?

With MyChart, access can be shared with those who are caring for or supporting you.

To be given access, your loved one will need to set up their own MyChart account first (if aged 16 or over). Create a MyChart account on the patient app (Opens in a new window)

Then the person requesting proxy access will need to do this through the app or in person by speaking to the patient’s care team.

People who can be given access include:

  • a parent or guardian (mandatory for patients under 16)
  • a carer
  • a partner or family member – for example adults caring for elderly parents
  • someone with lasting power of attorney

There are different levels of access available:

  • full access – allows complete access to all your health information
  • limited access – allows access to specific areas such as medications, results, or appointments
  • view only – allows information to be seen but not changed or updated

Each relationship type may have different levels of access depending on the patient’s age, consent, and clinical circumstances.

MyChart accounts for under 16s

If you are under 16, your MyChart account must be managed by a parent or guardian.
When you turn 16, you’ll be invited to set up your own account. At this point, any parental or guardian access will be limited to basic demographic information only.

Requesting access to a child’s account

If your child is under 16, you can request shared access to manage their MyChart account. There are two simple ways to do this:

  • In person – speak to your child’s clinician. They will be able to grant access during a clinic appointment if it’s appropriate, for example, if you are the child’s parent or legal guardian.
  • Online via MyChart – You can complete the proxy request form within MyChart and upload the required supporting documents.

Your request will then be reviewed by the MyChart Helpdesk.

Providing access for partners, family members and carers

If you would like to share access to your MyChart account with a partner or family member, they will need to set up their own MyChart account.

You can then send an invitation from your MyChart account using the Sharing Information button. It’s as simple as filling in the email address of the person you want to invite.

Requesting access for a patient who may lack capacity for consent

If you are caring for a loved one who may lack capacity to grant you consent to their account, you would need to speak to the patient’s clinician to request approval or speak to our Helpdesk team. You will be asked to provide relevant documentation to help process your request.
