Teaching award for Colchester Hospital

Colchester Hospital has been awarded a prestigious regional teaching award.

Trainees have voted it as their Orthopaedic Training Hospital of the Year for the East of England.

L to R: Trauma and orthopaedic consultants Nick Wardle, Siva Suresh and Georgina Wright with orthopaedic consultant and clinical lead Matthew Hynes and consultant orthopaedic surgeon and educational supervisor for the department, Mark Loeffler.

Mark Loeffler, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and educational supervisor for Trauma and Orthopaedics at Colchester, said the hospital has always been “near the top”, but it’s the first time it has won this regional award, which is voted for by orthopaedic trainees.

Ipswich Hospital was voted ninth in the region.

Mr Loeffler said:

Trainees like coming here and we’ve had good trainees who’ve applied for consultants jobs over the years and come back. It’s important to keep a good department.

All the consultants are interested in teaching which helps boost the training we offer, we’re very proud to have received the award.

Out of the team of 12 consultants at Colchester, ten completed their training on the Turner Road site and came back as consultants.

Orthopaedic trainees in the region marked the hospital for several aspects of their training, including operating lists and how much operating they get to do, formal teaching and educational value of clinics and meetings.

The scores are then used to determine the overall winner of the award.
