A general and colorectal consultant with East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) is now able to teach complex robotic surgery to others after demonstrating his own expertise and achieving consistently good results for patients.
Subash Vasudevan has become one of just a handful of consultants from around the country to become a ‘proctor’ in the use of the Davinci Xi surgical robot in colorectal surgery.
This means he is able to teach colleagues from ESNEFT, along with others from across the country, how to use the equipment to carry out minimally-invasive colon and bowel cancer operations.
Mr Vasudevan was recognised as a proctor after completing a set number of operations using the Davinci robot and achieving excellent outcomes for his patients. He also had to demonstrate his involvement in teaching, both by delivering courses and online lectures.
“I am delighted to have become a proctor in this exciting area,” said Mr Vasudevan, who is also ESNEFT’s lead for innovation and chair of the robotics steering group. “It means I will be able to share the knowledge and expertise I have gained since ESNEFT introduced this technology a year ago with others from across the country, as well as those working in our Trust.
“This is excellent news for our patients as it means they will continue to benefit from the very latest treatments delivered using state-of-the-art technology.
“I hope that this proctorship will help to put ESNEFT on the map while strengthening our growing reputation for embracing innovation to further improve the care we provide to the population we serve.”
