Study offers potentially life-changing screening for newborns

Expectant parents will now be offered a test for over 200 rare, treatable genetic conditions.

This is part of a national newborn research study.

People can either register their interest online or ask their midwife to speak to one of the research team at their hospital to sign up for The Generation Study.

A member of the study team will contact people who have expressed an interest. They can be signed up in person or over the phone if they want to take part.

People can take part if delivering their baby at Ipswich or Colchester hospitals. They can also take part if they are under ESNEFT maternity services and are having a home birth.

The study, led by Genomics England, is running in 48 NHS Trusts across England. Over 30,000 families have taken part so far and more than 100 babies have been found to have a suspected genetic condition.

Dr Jonathan Roberts, a genetic counsellor at the Trust and principal investigator for the study, said: “This study is really important for understanding the possible benefits of using genetic testing to support early diagnosis of treatable conditions.

“For the very small number of families who receive a ‘condition suspected’ result — likely less than 1 in 100 babies screened — this information can be crucial in securing early treatment that may reduce symptoms or prevent illness.

“It’s really exciting to see this study offered to people in our area. However, this is a research study. This means there are uncertainties involved and not everyone will want to sign up. That’s OK. What we want to do is make sure everyone has had a chance find out about the study and to take part if they want.

“We’ve got fantastic teams at Ipswich and Colchester who are supporting all women and pregnant people to make the decision that’s right for them. If you’re pregnant and want to know more, please get in touch.”
