I have worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Colchester Hospital since 2012. I previously worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist in the Louise Coote Lupus Unit at Guys and St Thomas Hospital, London.
I have an interest in managing connective tissue diseases, particularly SLE.

I graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 1994 and undertook A&E and basic medical training in hospitals around Birmingham and Norwich. I undertook a period of research in vasculitis prior to Rheumatology speciality training.
I joined Ipswich Hospital as a Consultant in 2004, and see patients in all areas of rheumatology with specialist interests in vasculitis, Paediatric Rheumatology, inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis.

I am a Consultant Rheumatologist at Ipswich hospital NHS Trust and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. I first joined Ipswich hospital in 2006 and after completing my training in the East of England and London re-joined the Rheumatology team as a permanent NHS Consultant in 2016.
I am a general rheumatologist with a specialist interest in ultrasound for early arthritis, Connective Tissue Disease (systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis) and Integrated Medicine. I run a dedicated ultrasound and CTD clinic and I am the East Anglia Rare Autoimmune Disease lead for Ipswich hospital.
I am a very keen educator, awarded with the “Educator of the Year” distinction by Health Education East of England and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education authority. I have a Masters degree in Medial Education, and I am the Educational supervisor for Rheumatology trainees in Ipswich Hospital.


Lynne Shand

I have been a pure Rheumatology Consultant for several years and joined the Ipswich Rheumatology team in March 2011. I enjoy seeing a wide variety of patients and aim to help patients with early rheumatoid arthritis achieve remission via tight control.
I recently commenced a multidisciplinary patient education programme to enhance patient empowerment. I developed an interest in CTD whilst training in London and I am keen to develop pathways for chronic MSK problems with GPs in the community.

I started at the Trust in October 2018 and I routinely review general rheumatology including patients with early inflammatory arthritis in clinic. I have an interest in performing temporal and axillary ultrasound in the management of giant cell arteritis (GCA).
Furthermore, I have an interest in service improvement with completion of the King’s Fund Emerging Clinical Leaders course.
My medical degree was completed at the Royal Free & University College Medical School, London and my intercalated BSc was attained in Immunology & Cell Pathology (UCL).
My specialist registrar training was completed within the East of England region, and I have been a member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) since 2012.


Tom Walton

I joined the Trust in 2002, having trained in Guys and St Thomas Hospitals. I see all general rheumatology patients with conditions ranging from gout to osteoporosis.
I review the majority of our paediatric patients in conjunction with the paediatric multidisciplinary team. I have also been interested in the education of junior doctors, having been a College Tutor, and have helped to set up the NRAS patient group for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.


Richard Watts

I have been a Consultant at the Trust since 1994. I am also an Honorary Professor at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. I cover all types of arthritis especially vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (other connective tissue diseases) and polymyalgia rheumatica. I have previously worked at UCLH, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. I qualified from Oxford University Medical School and then did my rheumatology training at UCLH (where I did a research degree), Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

I joined Ipswich Rheumatology team in November 2012. I am a general rheumatologist with special interest in inflammatory arthritis, osteoporosis, medical education and training.
