Charles Bodmer
Diabetes and Endocrinology

I trained in Liverpool and Cambridge, and was appointed as Consultant Physician and Diabetologist in North East Essex in 1996. I was the first speciality trained Diabetologist in the North East Essex and was the clinical lead for diabetes until my appointment as Divisional Director in 2015.
I have now returned to full time clinical work. I am currently the Clinical Lead for NEEDS (North East Essex Diabetes Service). I am proud of the accomplishments this service has realised for improving access and care for people with diabetes.


David Gannon

I have been working as a Consultant at Colchester Hospital since 2017. I look after the full range of medical patients for the first 72 hours of their hospital stay, from the very sick, to those with ambulatory care needs.
I run one clinic a week seeing patients with Diabetes or Endocrine conditions. I also treat people who have suffered an acute stroke to provide thrombolysis treatment. I am especially passionate about patient safety and education.
I am a Clinical Sub Dean with Anglia Ruskin University School of Medicine with responsibilities for coordinating all educational activities of their undergraduates within the Trust. I am a graduate of Dundee Medical School and received my specialist training in the South West of England.


Catherine Gouveia

I was appointed as a Consultant at Colchester Hospital in June 2017, and was appointed foundation year Programme Director in November 2017. I am responsible for looking after general medical patients on Easthorpe Ward and partake on the General medical on-call Consultant rota.
My outpatient commitments include General Endocrine clinics (Thyroid, Pituitary, Parathyroid, Adrenal and Genetic endocrine syndromes) in Colchester, Clacton and Harwich and I also work with North East Essex Diabetes Service (NEEDS). Specialist areas include Diabetes Transition and Young Persons’ clinics.
My educational role as joint foundation year Programme Director involves the overseeing of Foundation Year doctors training and progression. I am actively involved in both post-graduate and undergraduate teaching and training. I have a postgraduate qualification in medical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and University College London.
I graduated from Imperial College Medical School, University of London in 2006. I completed my specialist Diabetes and Endocrine training at Barts Health NHS Trust with tertiary Endocrine training at St. Bartholomew Hospital, London.


Karunakaran Vithian

I have worked at Colchester Hospital since 2013 and have been Clinical Lead since 2014 and RCP Tutor since 2017. I am responsible for looking after general medical patients on Easthorpe Ward.
I see patients in the endocrine clinic in Colchester, Clacton and Harwich and also work with North East Essex Diabetes Service (NEEDS) to care for patients with diabetes in various community settings.
As RCP Tutor I have a responsibility for overseeing Junior Doctors’ training.
