Colchester Hospital
All outpatient diabetes services are run by
North East Essex Diabetes Services (NEEDS) and referrals for this need to be redirected to NEEDS. We work with:
- the Paediatric Diabetes Team in the weekly Transition Clinic
- the weekly Diabetes Antenatal Clinic
- Diabetes Foot Clinic involving NEEDS, Podiatry, Vascular Surgery and Bone and joint surgeon
There is an out of hours service available to all children and families under the care of children’s diabetes service. The service is available between the hours of 5pm and 8am weekdays and 24 hours a day at weekends/bank holidays. Out of hours number is 01438 285000.

We run Diabetic Clinics dealing with all aspects of diabetes care including:
- Renal disease
- Insulin dose adjustment
- Insulin pumps
- Advice about starting a family
- Diabetes in pregnancy – situated in the hospital antenatal clinic
- Transition from children’s services
- Education about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
We have separate children’s clinics and can help with:
- Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
- Diabetes caused by genetic problems
- Diabetes linked to other diseases, such as Cystic Fibrosis

- Enhanced Lifestyle Support Service
The ‘Enhanced Lifestyle Support Service’ offers people with type 2 diabetes the opportunity to enrol in one of our dietetic-led lifestyle change programmes around Ipswich & East Suffolk. We are unable to perform routine podiatry or foot checks for people with diabetes but if you have a problem such as ulceration or a hot, red foot you can be seen at our diabetic foot clinic. You can be referred by your GP, nurse or podiatrist. We can:
- Fully assess your foot, in collaboration with a vascular or orthopaedic surgeon when needed
- Do blood tests
- Do tests such as X-Rays, angiograms
- Take samples of any wounds
- Remove dead or unhealthy tissue.
- Do minor procedures in clinic or arrange other procedures elsewhere
- Sometimes take photographs of wounds, but only with your consent
