Prestigious national role for ESNEFT surgeon

There’s been further success for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s spinal surgery team after it was announced consultant spinal surgeon David Cumming has been elected president of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS).

BASS is one of several spinal societies which form the United Kingdom Spine Societies Board (UKSSB) and it is a specialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).

It is the only specialist society that represents spinal surgeons from orthopaedic and neurosurgery in the UK, creating great opportunities for shared learning between specialties.

David, who has worked at Ipswich Hospital as a consultant since 2011, said: “It’s an honour to be appointed president of BASS.

“It is my aim to not only support my fellow spinal surgeons in their careers, but it is just as important to make sure that we set the highest standards of care for our patients too.”

BASS operates as a charity and all money is put back into the society in order to fund essential research and education into spinal conditions and treatments.

The society is able to produce the most up-to-date patient information on various conditions, ensuring that it remains free and is easily available online.

David added: “We signpost to this information because it’s the most comprehensive and informative for our patients. As president, I will help oversee this important work and, together with the rest of the executive committee, continue to push hard to achieve the highest standards in all that we do.”

David has been active within the society for many years, having been secretary for the past five years. As well as his work within BASS, David is also Chair of Specialist Spine Services for NHS England.
