The iconic Extreme Abseil event will make a thrilling return to Ipswich Hospital’s maternity tower this May.
Organised by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, the adrenaline-fuelled weekend will raise vital funds to enhance patient experience across East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT), which runs the hospitals and a variety of community services.
Among the courageous abseilers taking part is Joe Alexander who – despite his fear of heights – is taking on the challenge alongside close friends for a cause close to his heart.
In 2000, Joe (pictured below) was diagnosed with a rare form of testicular cancer aged 25. He was later diagnosed with a second cancer, lymphoma, in 2022. This personal journey has ignited his passion for supporting local healthcare services.

“I’ve experienced first-hand the exceptional care and facilities provided by the staff in the Woolverstone Wing at Ipswich Hospital,” said Joe, who lives in Ipswich. “The unit is out of this world – you cannot be treated in a better place.
“I really want to help as much and as often as I can to support this invaluable service.”

The Extreme Abseil promises to be an exhilarating experience for participants and spectators alike, featuring breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment for those daring enough to take the plunge.
“We’re thrilled to be hosting the Extreme Abseil once again at Ipswich Hospital,” said Sandra Gosney, the charity’s community fundraising and events manager. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to challenge themselves while raising funds that make such a difference to health and healing within our community. We’d encourage anyone who would like to take on a challenge to sign up.
“We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Barnes Construction for sponsoring this year’s Extreme Abseil. The support of local businesses is crucial to the running of our events and we can’t thank them enough.”

The abseil takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May. To take part or make a donation, visit the Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity website.
