Wheelchair services in East Suffolk and North Essex
The Wheelchair Service assess your mobility, postural and pressure care needs in line with eligibility criteria. We will assess your physical and mental health and the support you have from family, friends and carers. We will also consider where you live, your daily routines and your daily transport needs.
They provide a wide range of mobility support. This includes buggies, manual and powered wheelchairs. We also provide equipment to help with postural support and pressure care.

Our office hours are Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm, Friday 8.30am to 4pm.

Community equipment and wheelchair services is provided by a partnership between West Suffolk Hospital, ESNEFT and Medequip.
For wheelchair repairs and maintenance to NHS supplied wheelchairs.
How do I get referred?
Your GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist to complete a referral.
Alternatively if you are known to the service as an existing client you can self-refer by telephoning the service or completing the attached paper referral form and submitting to the service directly.

The Wheelchair Service is based at Clacton Hospital. Our team visit other hospitals, patient’s homes, residential and nursing homes, schools and workplaces.
You need to have a long term health condition affecting your mobility and require a wheelchair for 5 to 7 days a week. If you are not eligible we will we will work closely with you to provide the best advice on equipment and other local resources available to you.
How do I get referred?
We accept new referrals from GPs, trained therapy staff, District nurses and Community Matrons via email. The form needs be completed in full with the applicant, next of kin or carer.
Clients already known to us, or their relatives, carers or health professionals, can contact us directly with new enquiries or requests without needing a new referral.
We are unable to offer the following:
- Short term use of a wheelchair
- Infrequent use of a wheelchair
- Scooters and electrically powered wheelchairs for outdoor use only
- Residential and Nursing homes
