Lauren Smith (Team Lead)

Palliative and End of Life Care

I have worked for the trust since 2010 when I joined the Specialist Palliative Care Team. Since that time I have been fortunate to see the team develop in the provision of excellent palliative and end of life care.

Prior to coming to work at Colchester Hospital I worked in various roles at St Helena Hospice for 25 years.

I have lived all my life here in Colchester. I completed my Orthopaedic Training at Black Notley Hospital following this completed my general training at the Essex County Hospital where I worked after qualifying on the oncology ward until leaving to work at the hospice in 1985.

I have worked at Colchester Hospital for 6 years.

I work within the hospital specialist palliative care team supporting patients and their families who have life limiting or life threatening illnesses.

I trained at North Middlesex Hospital in North London, I then moved into Haematology/Bone marrow transplant Nursing for many years at UCLH, I also worked within Oncology at St Bartholomews.

Prior to working in Colchester I worked within specialist palliative care at Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge.

I qualified as a RGN at West Suffolk Hospital. I worked in a hospice for over 20 years during which time I achieved a degree in Palliative Care. I have been working at Colchester Hospital since November 2014.

Kerry Hipkin

I qualified in Mid Essex in 2001 and worked at Broomfield hospital for 18 months before getting a job in oncology on Rhys Lewis ward at Essex County hospital, Colchester.  I worked there for 11 years before I went to St Helena Hospice for 3 years.  I have tried some other roles but palliative care was always my passion.  I joined the palliative care team in January 2019.  This is a developmental role where I am learning more about what I am most passionate about so I can give patients the best palliative care they deserve.

I have worked in the Trust for 10 years. I trained at Anglia Ruskin University and Colchester Hospital. My background is respiratory and oncology nursing at Colchester Hospital, and this is where I found my passion for improving end of life care. I now work within the hospital specialist palliative care team as the End of Life Clinical Skills Nurse, supporting patients and those closest to them, who are at the end of their life. I also provide education, training and support around end of life care for all staff across Colchester Hospital.

 

Anne Martin

I have worked for the Trust for 8 years and I support patients and their families with life limiting illnesses including cancer, and also with care and the end of life. Support includes control of symptoms, emotional support for both patient and family members often in difficult situations, and providing information.

Before this, I worked in similar role in the community linked with St Helena Hospice for 19 years.

I have worked in Palliative Care for 32 years, previously in Mental Health for 2 years which has always been an asset in the role I hold.

I trained as a nurse at the University of Essex where I completed my MSc degree in adult nursing, finalised in 2007 with a research project on Information Provision for Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

Since then I have worked as a Registered Nurse in Colchester Hospital. At present role my is as a palliative care Clinical Nurse Specialist supporting patients and their families or carers when they arrive at the Emergency Department (ED) and the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU).

I assess symptoms, particular circumstances and preferences of patients with a life limiting condition, who may have experienced an acute episode or be approaching the end of their life, in order to provide appropriate information, emotional support and specialist palliative care advice for the individual and those close to them.

Rachel Thurston

I have been employed by Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust since February 2016. I am part of the palliative care team based at Colchester General Hospital that provides a seven day service for patients with specialist palliative care needs. Palliative care incorporates a wide range of patients who are recognised as having incurable illnesses or life limiting illnesses and who require specialist advice whilst in hospital. The palliative care team also assesses every recognised dying patient across the hospital.

Prior to working for Colchester Hospital, I have worked in the community as Specialist Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist based at St Helena Hospice in Colchester. I have over 20 years’ experience in palliative care. I have worked closely with bereaved children and teenagers. I have also worked as a Macmillan Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist, setting up a new service at St Helena Hospice in 2008.

I originally trained as a Registered General Nurse at Guys and Lewisham School of Nursing far too many years ago. I graduated with a degree in Palliative care in 2009.

I have worked at Colchester Hospital in the Palliative Care Team for over 7 years. I trained and started my career at Ipswich Hospital within Oncology. I have a degree in Palliative Care and I am a qualified mentor and Independent Nurse Prescriber. I am currently halfway into my Masters in Advanced Practice.

Lou Askins (Team Lead)

I have worked at Ipswich Hospital for 16 years, working mainly in the haematology and oncology unit,  specialising in Chemotherapy. I joined the Palliative Care team 6 years ago and have been part of the growing team from 3 specialist nurses  to the present 7 Specialist nurses now covering a 7 day service. I also recently took on the role as Team Lead.

I have worked in the Ipswich Hospital palliative care team for nearly 4 years. Prior to this I worked for a pancreatic cancer charity and in a local hospice both in the community and in-patient care setting. Outside of work I enjoy living by the sea with my young family.

I have been a Nurse both at Colchester and Ipswich hospitals. With experience in COTE, Oncology, Complex Discharge and now within the Palliative care team as End of Life Clinical Skills nurse. Throughout my career, I have held a strong interest in palliative and End of life care, this job has enabled me to combine my clinical skills and passion for education to teach best practice in End of Life care on the acute wards.

I spent five years in Oncology on qualifying at Ipswich Hospital before moving to the Emergency Department for two years. After a brief stint in the new Frailty Unit I spent the next five years working as a Community Specialist Nurse in Palliative Care for St Elizabeth Hospice before joining the Ipswich Hospital Palliative Care Team.

I have worked within the specialties of Oncology, Haematology & Palliative Care since qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2009. To enhance my specialist knowledge I gained a BSc Hons degree in Palliative care in 2013. Having joined ESNEFT in 2018, initially working as a Junior Sister on Somersham Ward at Ipswich Hospital, I gained a position as a Macmillan Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist in July 2019.

I have worked in palliative care for over 5 years; I have worked at Ipswich Hospital for 25 years and have a varied background including oncology and haematology. I am currently studying towards my degree in palliative care nursing.

Geraldine Suckling

I have worked in Palliative care since 2014; I did my masters in 2013 in bereavement studies and completed my palliative care module in 2016. I have a wide range of experience in working in inpatient hospice, day hospice and community palliative care. I recently had a publication in the British Journal of Nursing in 2019. I started with the hospital palliative care team in 2020.
