Diabetes and Endocrinology

Ipswich Hospital

I lead the Ipswich Hospital Diabetes team which has a wide ranging interest in diabetes, including foot complications, new technologies, patient education and service delivery. Under my leadership, the Diabetes team has evolved to deliver a very comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service, and recently has teamed with primary care to deliver an integrated diabetes service.

I lead a large research unit involved in trials of new therapies, devices related to diabetes care including insulin pens, glucose meters and glucose sensors. I have pioneered a new technique for early diagnosis of small fibre diabetic neuropathy.

I won the national HSJ patient safety award in November 2012 for the team’s pioneering ‘Ipswich Touch Test for feet’ which helps identify patients at high risk and therefore requiring heel protection. It simplifies foot examinations. I am Sub-Dean for UEA and Cambridge undergraduates, have trained many research fellows and published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles.

I have been NHS Diabetes’s national clinical lead on inpatient diabetes care and developed the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit; the world’s first and largest audit on inpatient diabetes care. I am also involved in the development of the National Diabetes Food Audit, the NCEPOD on amputations and contribute to NICE guidance.

I am the specialist medical adviser to Diabetes UK and clinical lead for their Diabetes Foot Campaign. I am the current President of the Endocrine and Diabetes section of the Royal Medical Society of Medicine.
