Being diagnosed with cancer is a difficult time. As well as coping with the treatment, cancer can affect work, your income and increase your costs.

However, there is a lot of help available and the following agencies can offer advice and support:

Benefits advice

Age UK

Age UK provides independent, impartial and expert information, for those receiving a state pension, on a variety of topics including benefits, legal advice, heating costs and more.  You can contact them via telephone, their website or face-to-face in local communities.

GP Care Advisors

Care advisors are based at your surgery and can offer benefits advice. Please contact your local GP surgery for more information. GP Care Advisors can arrange to visit you at home, if it is not possible to visit or telephone the local surgery.


Jobcentre Plus

A government-funded employment agency and social security office that aims it is to help people of working age find employment in the UK. Administers claims for benefits such as Income Support, Incapacity Benefit, and Jobseeker’s Allowance.

The Salvation Army (debt advice and emergency assistance)

The Salvation Army helps people manage what they owe and works alongside them to make a realistic plan for repaying their debts.

This free debt advice service can contact creditors on a person’s behalf to explore and negotiate options like repayment holidays and more realistic repayment plans.

As well as helping people who are experiencing homelessness, they support families who have hit hard times, people who have been made redundant, become ill or are experiencing benefit delay.

The Salvation Army also offers emergency assistance to people in need (meal vouchers/food parcels).

Tendring Mental Health Hub

A community clothing shop that offers physical and mental health support for issues such as loneliness and isolation, housing problems and money worries, as well as debit and welfare benefits advice, via a drop-in service.

It was launched by the Tendring branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau in 2015 with support from Active Essex, Essex County Council, Essex’s Police and Crime Commissioner and Tendring District Council (TDC).
