About this service

Spinal Cancer (myeloma) Service

We will work in conjunction with you and the other staff treating you if your spine is affected by myeloma.

During your first appointment you will be seen in outpatients,  if it seems that the myeloma involves your spine then you may be sent for further tests such as:

  • X-rays
  • CT scans
  • MRI scans

Once we have all the results you will then be referred to the appropriate clinic, which will be either:

  • joint haematology and spinal clinic
  • spinal clinic

We will then help you decide on your course of treatment which could be:

  • wearing a spinal brace until your spine heals itself naturally
  • having a small operation called a vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty which is where we inject medical cement into your spinal bones to prevent them from collapsing and causing you pain.
