Lea Fitzsimmons

Palliative and End of Life Care

I have worked at Colchester Hospital for 6 years.

I work within the hospital specialist palliative care team supporting patients and their families who have life limiting or life threatening illnesses.

I trained at North Middlesex Hospital in North London, I then moved into Haematology/Bone marrow transplant Nursing for many years at UCLH, I also worked within Oncology at St Bartholomews.

Prior to working in Colchester I worked within specialist palliative care at Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge.

I qualified as a RGN at West Suffolk Hospital. I worked in a hospice for over 20 years during which time I achieved a degree in Palliative Care. I have been working at Colchester Hospital since November 2014.

Anne Martin

Palliative and End Of Life Care nurse specialist

Colchester Hospital

I have worked for the Trust for 8 years and I support patients and their families with life limiting illnesses including cancer, and also with care and the end of life. Support includes control of symptoms, emotional support for both patient and family members often in difficult situations, and providing information.

Before this, I worked in similar role in the community linked with St Helena Hospice for 19 years.

I have worked in Palliative Care for 32 years, previously in Mental Health for 2 years which has always been an asset in the role I hold.

Lauren Smith

I have worked for the trust since 2010 when I joined the Specialist Palliative Care Team. Since that time I have been fortunate to see the team develop in the provision of excellent palliative and end of life care.

Prior to coming to work at Colchester Hospital I worked in various roles at St Helena Hospice for 25 years.

I have lived all my life here in Colchester. I completed my Orthopaedic Training at Black Notley Hospital following this completed my general training at the Essex County Hospital where I worked after qualifying on the oncology ward until leaving to work at the hospice in 1985.

I trained as a nurse at the University of Essex where I completed my MSc degree in adult nursing, finalised in 2007 with a research project on Information Provision for Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

Since then I have worked as a Registered Nurse in Colchester Hospital. At present role my is as a palliative care Clinical Nurse Specialist supporting patients and their families or carers when they arrive at the Emergency Department (ED) and the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU).

I assess symptoms, particular circumstances and preferences of patients with a life limiting condition, who may have experienced an acute episode or be approaching the end of their life, in order to provide appropriate information, emotional support and specialist palliative care advice for the individual and those close to them.

Rachel Thurston

I have been employed by Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust since February 2016. I am part of the palliative care team based at Colchester General Hospital that provides a seven day service for patients with specialist palliative care needs. Palliative care incorporates a wide range of patients who are recognised as having incurable illnesses or life limiting illnesses and who require specialist advice whilst in hospital. The palliative care team also assesses every recognised dying patient across the hospital.

Prior to working for Colchester Hospital, I have worked in the community as Specialist Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist based at St Helena Hospice in Colchester. I have over 20 years’ experience in palliative care. I have worked closely with bereaved children and teenagers. I have also worked as a Macmillan Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist, setting up a new service at St Helena Hospice in 2008.

I originally trained as a Registered General Nurse at Guys and Lewisham School of Nursing far too many years ago. I graduated with a degree in Palliative care in 2009.

I have worked at Colchester Hospital in the Palliative Care Team for over 7 years. I trained and started my career at Ipswich Hospital within Oncology. I have a degree in Palliative Care and I am a qualified mentor and Independent Nurse Prescriber. I am currently half way into my Masters in Advanced Practice.
