League of Friends settle into new shop at Colchester Hospital

A shop run by the Colchester League of Hospital Friends’ staff and volunteers is now trading in a new location while work to transform the main entrance of Colchester Hospital is underway.

The organisation, which ran its shop within the reception area from when the hospital first opened in 1985, and before that in the old Severalls Hospital, is now based in a cabin outside the main hospital building that’s off the footpath from the visitors’ car park.

Moyia Burrows, one of the Colchester League of Hospital Friends managers, said although the new shop is only their temporary base, it is “lovely”.

She said: “We won’t be here forever, but what we have here is excellent. It’s really exciting and like an adventure for us.

“My staff have been fantastic and so supportive, they work so well as a team and our volunteers also came in to help because they wanted to be part of it.”

With help from Colchester Hospital’s Estates team and Mersea-based developers Stroods, the new shop was fitted out and ready for the group to move into on Thursday, 11 July after the old shop closed on Wednesday, 10 July.

Once the two-storey extension is built at the front of the hospital over the summer, the group is set to move into a new unit on the ground floor.

Essex Mechanical, MCBS, Colchester Electrical, Panther Security, Brooks & Wood and Colne Valley Building Services were also involved in working on the move.
