Gennine Pelayo

Moving to a new country to start a new job is a daunting prospect for anyone, but Gennine Pelayo, a resourcing officer in the Recruitment team at Colchester Hospital, goes above and beyond to make the process a smooth and happy one for our international recruits.

She is said to “go the extra mile” to ensure the new starters who are relocating thousands of miles from home are given a warm welcome, not only to the Trust, but to the Colchester community.

Just one example of her kindness and caring attitude was on Christmas Eve 2017 when she cooked a traditional festive dinner for some of the international recruits so they could experience a typical Christmas in their new country.

Her mother Gene, a nurse at the hospital, travelled to the UK from their home in the Philippines in 2004.Gennine stayed at home for two years until her mother had saved enough money to bring Gennine and her younger sister to join her. Now Gennine and her sister Nina, an occupational therapist, both work at the hospital alongside Gene.

When Gennine was on holiday and travelled to the Phillippines earlier this year, she even left some of her own belongings behind so she could bring items back to Colchester for the newly recruited employees to support them with their relocation.

But her job doesn’t end once the new recruits arrive in the town.

Gennine organises social gatherings and makes new team members aware of key locations and things they need to know, including showing them how public transport works. She then remains a point of contact throughout the year.

She will often choose to shop for welcome packs in her own time, making sure international employees have a bag of essential items, including bread and milk, before they start and will also meet them out of hours where necessary.

With her “can do” and thoughtful attitude, Gennine is said to “live the values of the Trust 24/7/365 days a year”.
