‘Up and Active’ exercise referral scheme

We have many different initiatives to suit all levels of fitness from seated exercises upwards.  If you have had surgery within the last 6-8 weeks, or are currently undergoing chemotherapy you may need to delay the start date.

Suffolk Sport monthly information sessions

These are held at Ipswich and District Indoor Bowling Club, Rushmere Road, Ipswich IP4 4JU.

You will be invited to attend an initial one-off information session, which will help you find the right level of activity and understand how and why engaging in any activity helps with recovery. You will then receive a years’ worth of support that will keep you motivated and help you progress to the appropriate level of fitness for you.

Suffolk Support has a vast menu of activities across the region that you might like to access over the year.  We suggest if you are booking onto any of our exercise initiatives that you attend one of these sessions.

You can book onto an information session through the John Le Vay Cancer Support and Information Centre on 01473 715748.  The centre is open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Swim and socialise

The classes are held on alternate weeks at Ufford Park Hotel from 11.00 am – 12.30 pm

This is mainly about building confidence in the water, feeling comfortable getting into a swimming costume after surgery, and enjoying the company of others who have a mutual understanding.  Some will stand in the water and chat; others might swim the odd length or two.  The group usually then meet afterwards for a coffee.  Fee:  £5.00 per session.

Coach-led swimming sessions

This is a more structured session, helping people to develop and adapt their swimming style if they have had surgery, building up strength and confidence. The session is led by a swimming coach, who will help everyone individually during the session.  The group meets weekly at Fore Street Baths, IpswichFee:  £3.50 per person.

Gym referrals

We work in partnership with a number of gyms across Suffolk with appropriately qualified and dedicated instructors who are able to meet the particular needs of cancer patients.  You will be given a tailor-made exercise plan that takes any of your limitations into consideration.  The subscription is greatly reduced for a 3-month period.  You may also take along a “fitness buddy” with you who will also pay the same reduced subscription.  Referrals normally take 2 to 3 weeks to arrange.

‘Getting back on track’  exercise class

This is a fun, 6-week course  held every Tuesday from 1.30 pm – 2.30 pm at Brackenbury Sports Club, Felixstowe.  It is designed to gradually help build up your stamina and muscle strength, and also greatly helps with general health and well-being.  Sessions can be tailor-made to suit all fitness levels including seated exercises.  You may have someone attend with you if you wish.

The classes are free for the first 6 weeks.  A follow-on class is available at £3 a session if you wish to continue.

‘Fun, fit, Friday’ exercise class

We run two weekly fitness classes held in the hospital physiotherapy gym.

The beginners class is held from 4.45 pm – 5.15 pm and an advanced class from 5.15 pm to 6.15 pm. These classes can be accessed as often as you like, for as little or as long as you like. This is a fun class, using a variety of activities to get people moving.   Sessions are tailor-made for each individual.

Fee:  £4.00 per session. Partially funded by the Survivorship charity fund.

Specialised exercise class for breast cancer patients

The classes are held at two possible venues – Henley Road Ipswich Sports Club or Felixstowe Leisure Centre.

This is an invaluable, fully funded 6-week course.  It addresses some of the common problems following breast surgery and / or following radiotherapy.  It is best attended approximately 6 weeks after surgery, and can also be accessed during or after radiotherapy. It will help address any tightness or swelling and improve your range of movement, and will help prevent the development of lymphoedema. The group offers invaluable peer support.

There is a follow-on course if you wish to continue after the 6 weeks at a cost of £6.00 per session.

We also have a DVD available in our centre for breast cancer patients, outlining all the breast exercises.

Specialised workshop and 6 week exercise classes for prostate cancer patients

Workshops are held in Ipswich Hospital and exercise classes are held at Bluebird Lodge, Ravenswood.

This is a 2 hour workshop explaining about your pelvic floor and how exercise can help reduce or eliminate side effects of treatment.  There is also advice on diet and lifestyle. Once completed, you are encouraged to join the 6 week exercise class.

There is no Charge as funded by Prostate Cancer Support Group and Somersham Support Group.

Health and well-being days

The next event is scheduled at The Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre on 12th October from 9.30 am – 3.30 pm.

The day is accessible to anyone whose life is affected by cancer.  During the day you will be able to attend a number of workshops on common areas of concern, e.g. financial support, dietary issues and emotional well-being and exercise.  There will also be a market place from which you can gain further information about the services and support available via the hospital and the local community.
