Crane lifting works underway at Colchester Hospital

As work to improve and extend the front of Colchester Hospital gathers pace, 49 modular units will be arriving on the Turner Road site over the next seven days and lifted into position like building blocks by two large cranes.

This work will see the new single-storey Urgent Treatment Centre in front of the existing Emergency Department, along with a two-storey block directly in front of the former main entrance, take shape.

The work is being done in two phases:

From midday on Thursday 8 August to midday on Tuesday 13 August (daytime only)

  • A 500 tonne crane will deliver and off load 37 units from lorries within the existing construction site compound at the north end of the hospital (near to the former Emergency Department entrance).

From 11.30pm on Wednesday 14 August to 5am on Friday 16 August (night-time only)

  • A 200 tonne crane will deliver and lift 12 units from lorries next to the site compound on the south entrance side of the front of the hospital (near to the temporary main entrance and Children’s Outpatients).

Existing pedestrian routes into the main block and Emergency Department will not be affected.
