Beat the heatwave

Beat the heatwave

Visit your loved ones early!

People are today being encouraged to avoid the heat and make earlier than normal visits to see their loved ones at Colchester and Ipswich hospitals.

The Met Office has issued an Amber alert until Friday at 9am, as a result of the current heatwave, and are urging people to avoid being in the sun, especially between 11am and 3pm.

Friends and relatives wishing to visit either site are urged to speak to the relevant ward sister to arrange a suitable time to arrive.

It is the latest step being taken by the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) to manage in the sweltering conditions.

Since the amber warning on Monday both hospitals have been distributing ice lollies to patients and have also ordered in additional towels which can be dampened to cool the skin.

Hospital staff can request supplies of ice from their respective helpdesks, while chilled squash and fruit juice is being offered to patients during beverage rounds in addition to the usual tea and coffee. Wards and departments generally have cool water dispensers, which can be used by patients, staff and visitors.

Visitors may find wards looking a little darker than usual as window blinds are being pulled down to help keep the heat out.
